Latest updates and the nature of exploration

I've just started playing in the past week. The last update rather seriously changed the way the basic mobs operated, and it's brought up a recurring issue in these kinds of games :

Now that animals are striking me more, I'm being encouraged to both make more curatives and reserve more materials for repairing armor. I would say that while this is fine in a big group, it fundamentally breaks down at lower population levels since it demands a scatter-brained approach to resource collection.

Can I suggest that we define more clearly the endurance of the player? Will it be defined in the durability of armor and weapons, or in the power ups and ammo? Either one is fine, really, but both at once is a bit silly.
